rural renewal

Set in the River North Area of Chicago, this project works to cultivate appreciation for agricultural practices while bringing communities together through food itself. Visitors will experience the journey of seed to food through the project's blend of programs that focus of three main concepts: grow, prepare, and share.

The project explores the intersection of rural structures and methods of farming, specifically that of silos and center-pivot irrigation systems. Being placed in an urban Midwestern city, Rural Renewal gives citizens and tourists and chance to learn about where their food comes from, how it is prepared, and how it impacts their daily lives.

Long Section

The overarching concept involves two vertical volumes, or silos, signifying the "grow" and "share" components of the project. One holds a vertical garden while one holds a number of restaurants, which receive live goods directly from the vertical garden. Connecting the silos are two horizontal volumes containing the market and cooking school. These programs emphasize the "prepare" concept and act as a transition stage between the growing and sharing programs.
