As part of the Google R+D Capstone, this project focuses on typologies of kinetic technologies that enable enclosure, privacy, and collaboration. Taking inspiration from tensile structures, the malleable fabric of this canopy can be manipulated and secured, creating privacy on demand. Through experimentation and collaboration, Holly Smithberger and I were able to bring our design to fruition with a full scale prototype, allowing us to further our research.

This project explores the formal relationship between an object and its container, beginning with an industrial design study of common household objects. I first worked to understand the details of a stapler through graphic analysis, then developed three containers for the object, each with a different function: storage, reveal, and display. Through the design process, I was able to identify the strongest formal aspects of each and combine them, resulting in Swing Pavilion.

Although many believe that the suburbs are designed for the safety and wellbeing of children, this notion is far from reality. Play spaces are often an afterthought in suburban design, causing children to seek out their own spaces for play. In partnership with Mollie Davis, we designed a conceptual "suburban roofscape" that works to break free of suburban monotony and give children a new way to interact with their environment.

By photographing a single chair from different angles and distances, I created a collage of photographs resulting in a new design. Assessing the perspective of the collage, I then drew a 2-D elevation oblique of what the chair would look like in reality. In the final phase of the project, I created a physical model based on the drawing alone. The end product is an object that relates to the original chair I photographed, but is something entirely unique on its own.

Inspired by coral, Urban Reef uses the concept of "merge" to result in a co-working tower that joins various programs together, creating a new working environment. At its base, the project consists of four individual branches that wave their way up and occasionally flow together. At these points, voided spaces emerge, producing a myriad of different floor plans and sectional variations.
